Butler County’s Bold Move: A Win for Homeowners — and a Call for Broader Reform

Butler County homeowners are finally getting some relief after years of skyrocketing property taxes. In 2024 alone, tax bills across the county jumped by more than $45 million, with the average property value rising 37%. In some districts, homeowners saw increases of more than 20% — costs that strained families, seniors, and communities alike.

That’s why last week’s action by the Butler County Commissioners is so significant. By rolling back half of the county’s inside millage and expanding the homestead program, commissioners delivered more than $20 million in relief — savings that will put roughly $100 back into the pockets of homeowners for every $100,000 of assessed value.

For REALTORS®, this action reflects what we’ve long been calling for: meaningful reform that acknowledges the crushing impact of property taxes on affordability and neighborhood stability. At the state level, our association has pushed for broader fixes to Ohio’s system, but until those reforms come, local leadership matters — and Butler County has shown the way.

It is especially meaningful that Commissioner T.C. Rogers, himself a REALTOR® and a member of RAGC, has been at the forefront of this effort. He understands firsthand the burden on homeowners and the challenges our industry faces. We extend a special thanks to Commissioner Rogers for representing our profession so well and for standing up for the people of Butler County.

This is an important win for property owners, but it’s also a reminder of the work still ahead. REALTORS® will continue to advocate for fair, predictable property tax policies that protect homeowners and keep the dream of homeownership within reach.
